Mary Queen Of The High Street

Large Programme Image

Synopsis

According to British Prime Minister, David Cameron, our high streets are now at crisis point. In a final attempt to save them from extinction, the Prime Minister has turned to retail guru Mary Portas for solutions. Mary’s recommendations were made public in “The Portas Review”, which sets out a plan for regeneration and reinvention. The final suggestion in Mary’s report was to pilot her ideas and now the government have decided to give it a go. It could be career suicide or she might save Britain’s high streets from disappearing for ever. Whatever happens, it’s a huge gamble.

Mary will try a range of different approaches to get the High Street working, from convincing landlords to give over their vacant shops for pop-ups, to transforming struggling small shops into ‘anchor stores’. Mary is also determined to go straight to the prime minister to fight his support for the construction of massive edge of town supermarkets – the main reason many high streets are empty.

Throughout the series we’ll follow Mary’s personal journey; every step of the way she’ll face intense scrutiny from her industry, from local government and of course, the national press. So the pressure will be on to deliver. Can Mary really rescue our high streets?
