Two generations needing help. One solution. An extraordinary term in the life of a unique school.
In an ambitious ground-breaking project, The Hairy Bikers Si King and Dave Myers are recruiting up to thirty pensioners to join a struggling secondary school in a bid to transform the lives of the school, the children, and the elderly volunteers - in just one term.
Pensioners will be paired up with a student who they will mentor in and outside of the classroom, whether it is a chronically shy 11 year-old whose self-confidence needs boosting, a wayward boy who faces expulsion, or a 15 year-old with a passion to be a doctor but whose grades don't match their ambition.
Experts predict the project could raise students' numeracy and literacy skills by as much as 50%, but academic progress is only part of the experiment... the young people will come to see their mentors as surrogate grandparents, agony aunts, friends and guides. In return, the pensioners themselves will be learning new skills as they join IT classes, foreign language lessons and art sessions.
This is a series about two generations who have more in common than they think - it is about big societal issues and small, intimate moments between people who are often undervalued and ignored by the rest of society. Now, they are joining forces to demonstrate what they can achieve together.
