For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures on earth, involving epic journeys across countries and around the world.
Simon Reeve retraces our ancestors’ intrepid footsteps. He learns about the forgotten aspects of pilgrimage, including all the vice, thrills and dangers that travellers encountered. He explores the faith, hopes, desires, and even the food that kept pilgrims – both medieval and modern - on the road.
Simon journeys first from northern England to Canterbury. Then he makes his way across France and northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago, before trekking high into the mighty Alps and on to Rome. Finally, Simon follows in the footsteps of pilgrims who for centuries have made the long, arduous and dangerous journey from glorious Istanbul in Turkey to one of the holiest places on earth – Jerusalem.
