DCI Tom Mathias is back roaming the Hinterland for a second series.

Aberystwyth. A place of searing beauty. A natural crucible of colliding worlds where history, myth and tradition come face-to-face with the modern and the contemporary. But it's panoramic vistas hide a multitude of sins...

Atmospheric and disturbing, this is a detective drama of poetry and scale, a story of blood, soil and belonging. This is hinterland.

Story 1
The first series of Hinterland reached its bloody climax with DCI Tom Mathias' future hanging in the balance. Now, weeks later, our troubled detective is forced to return to the front line after an arson attack on an isolated farmhouse leaves a mother and child fighting for their lives. Drawn into a community of failing farms and long standing feuds, Mathias and his partner DI Mared Rhys will be pushed to the brink as they try to solve this disturbing case.

Story 2
Mathias is under pressure; Meg Mathias his wife has turned up in Aberystwyth, and he’s under investigation by the IPCC following the death of Mari Davies in the last episode. When a bus driver’s body is found shot on an isolated mountainside, the investigation provides a welcome escape for DCI Mathias. The team have a suspect to question but Mathias believes he is an unlikely killer. In his current state of mind Mathias is fascinated by the life-style choices taken by ex-soldier John Bell. He also knows that he cannot avoid Meg for much longer.

Story 3
The murder of a local dignitary and barrister Owen Beynon leads to the uncovering of a tragic story of love and loss fuelled by mistrust and suspicion in the depths of the Hinterland. Why was local woman Nora Prothero and her son Daniel living such a isolated life? What has Mathias discovered buried in the garden of their home? Will Mathias find Daniel before local farmer Glyn Powell gets hold of him? The clock is ticking but Mathias knows that the relationship between the farmer's daughter and Daniel is key to uncovering the truth.

Story 4
The discovery of a body in a remote lake leads Mathias and the team to investigate the complicated private life of missing schoolteacher Greta Pritchard. Her father Gwilym has secrets to hide. But what about the other men in Greta's life? This is a world rife with secrets. Will Mathias and the team unravel them in time to save the missing Greta?

Story 5
The tension is mounting in this final episode of Hinterland. DCI Mathias must solve the case of the murdered local man Aron Bowen, but to do so he will have to deal with feuding family members and the dead man's run-away daughter. Will he discover the truth or will long held secrets remain buried.
